greetings from the top of the world

Today we’ll be hiking in the Olympic Mountains.  Our packs are loaded and we’re eating a healthy breakfast at McDonald’s before we leave.  Well, it’s breakfast, anyway.  Yesterday, we drove up to Hurricane Ridge and got a great view of the mountains.  It felt like the top of the world.

Port Angeles is in a beautiful location: the Strait of Juan de Fuca and Victoria Island are to the north; Olympic National Park is just a few miles to the south.  So within 30 minutes, you can go from the top of the world to an international port.

The downside of of Port Angeles is that the town is very depressed.  Originally a timber town, unemployment is high, causing an increase in drug use and crime.  It also seems to be behind in technology as I can’t find a single plug-in at McDonald’s, so I’ll have to cut this short to save battery power.  Our new campground is out of phone and Internet range, so don’t be surprised if there are less posts this week.  More later…

Thanks, for checking out my vacation stories. The pics were quick on the iPhone and the lighting not the best, but they capture the extremes and beauty of the place. I’d like to spend time with a nicer camera around here.
